Chrysler to recall 18,092 Fiat 500L cars in the US over transmission defect

Chrysler Group, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is recalling 18,092 Fiat 500L cars in the US due to transmission shift lever defect that may not shift out of park.

The latest recall comes less than a week after Chrysler issued a recall of around 49,400 full-size cars to replace various headlamp components that overheated.

In a filing with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Detroit-based carmaker said that it was recalling 18,092 Fiat 500L models built between 5 April 2013, and 22 January 2014, at the company's plant in Serbia.

Chrysler said that in cold temperatures signals sent between the car's main computer and the gear shifter could be affected. If that happened, the shifter may not shift out of 'Park' or the response may be delayed, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler said it had more than 100 reports over the issue, but none of crashes or injuries.

Dealers will replace the shifter module and update the software from next month.
