Cisco Systems Inc, a leading provider of networking solutions, is planning to set up a manufacturing facility in India to make the most out of the government's policy of incentivising electronic system design and manufacturing sector, Parliament was informed today.

Cisco, based in the US, manufactures products in the core areas of routing and switching, as well as advanced technologies in areas such as unified communications, network security, video, virtualization and cloud computing. (See: Cisco upbeat about Modi, likely to beef up India investments)

Besides Cisco, seven other companies from the US and Japan, including their subsidiaries, have proposed to invest in the country under the modified special incentive package scheme (M-SIPS), minister for communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

''Several companies, including Cisco are evaluating the various incentives offered by the government for investments in the Electronic System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) sector,'' Prasad informed the House.

While Cisco has a research and development (R&D) facility in India, its largest outside the US, it does not have any manufacturing facility in the country, but maintains a chain of manufacturing facilities across the globe.

Prasad said besides CISCO, altogether 60 companies have evinced interest in investing in the country under the M-SIPS in electronic hardware manufacturing so far.

Cisco, which commenced India operations in 1995, has seven sales offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Cisco's global development center is in Bangalore and is the largest outside the US. It houses Cisco's R&D, IT, services and customer support teams and develops disruptive business models for Cisco to create new go-to-market channels, markets, processes and technologies for emerging markets.

Besides it has an advanced global briefing center at Bangalore where the company showcases its latest technology solutions and proof-of-concepts.
