Cisco to provide networking infra for four smart city projects

Networking company Cisco, has secured connectivity projects in four cities in three states, including Navi Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Jaipur in Rajasthan and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Cisco has been in discussions with state governments across the country to transform 20 cities into smart and connected cities, which is part of the Narendra Modi government's plan to develop 100 smart cities.

Cisco said it would basically provide the networking infrastructure for the projects even as it works with various partners who will provide different solutions such as smart street lighting, traffic management, CCTV security surveillance and water management.

The four projects are up and running and Cisco said, it would be deploying networking solution in a phased manner.

Cisco has deployed an IP-based city surveillance system in Navi Mumbai, which alerts the police department about suspicious movements and objects and allows better security management through 24/7 intelligent monitoring, reports quoted Amit Phadnis, president engineering and India site leader at Cisco, as saying.

In Jaipur, Phadnis said, Cisco has started with deployment of four solutions, including Wi-Fi connectivity, interactive citizen services kiosks, intelligent video cameras for security and environmental sensors to monitor pollution, temperature and humidity.

He was speaking on the sidelines of Cisco Connect, a customer event held in Mumbai, where Cisco showcased solutions for the Digital Era.

The government's Digital India project is expected to open up a $45-$50 billion market for networking solutions over the next five years, as per the latest report by Sustainability Outlook.

Cisco is also looking at the ICT opportunities in the four new smart and connected cities in the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, which include the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat, Shendra-Bidkin Mega Industrial Park in Maharashtra, Manesar Bawal Investment Region in Haryana and Khushkhera Bhiwadi Neemrana Investment Region in Rajasthan.
