Coal India targets production of 615 million tonnes by 2016-17

06 Jun 2012

Maharatna public sector unit Coal India Limited (CIL) has identified 56 spillover projects of 11th Plan and 69 new projects for increasing coal production during the 12th Plan period to 615 million tonnes.

CIL has set a coal production target of 615 million tonnes for the terminal year of the 12th Plan, ie, 2016-17, against the production target of 468.74 million tonnes set for the current financial year.

This contribution to production will come from existing and completed group of projects, ongoing group of projects and future group of projects, CIL said in a release

The company said the assumption of 615 million tones of production by 2017 is based on requisite clearances, viz, environmental and forest clearances, land acquisition, law and order issues and evacuation problems are addressed in a time bound manner with the cooperation of the central and state agencies.

CIL had, on 23 April 2012, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the ministry of coal - for its key performance areas for the fiscal 2012-13.

As per the MoU for the fiscal 2012-13, CIL's targeted production and coal offtake have been fixed at 468.74 million tonnes and 474.70 million tones, respectively, for attaining an 'Excellent' rating.

In 2010-11, CIL had a lower rating because of various constraints for starting new projects in time and heavy monsoon proved detrimental for achieving desired level of coal production.
