Designer blood analyser

One of the Pune-based Design Directions' most recent and most prestigious successes is the clinical blood analyser, which they designed for Transasia Biomedicals. Officially launched at the Medica ’99 in Dusseldorf in November 1999, it is a compact blood analyser.

The clinical blood analyser is also one of the most comprehensively designed products from Design Directions.

"In designing, form and function are strongly interrelated. Once the form is worked out well, the function automatically fits in. It is a question of balancing the two," says Design Directions' Falguni Gokhale. "It is important that the user feels comfortable to work on the product. We try and make it a friendly looking product, as well as a user friendly product," points out husband Satish Gokhale. "We look into aesthetics and ergonomics – the man-machine interface – which has a lot to do with user psychology."

The blood analyser was designed with the pathology lab operator in mind. The analyser has the shape of a carousel. The software and mechanism that went in was made user friendly. Any lab operator can operate it, guided by the simple, easy-to-understand touch screen buttons. Each function is colour coded, so that function selection is instant and efficient.

Their design inputs also include building even the graphic user interface that goes with the software. "Whether it is product design or visual communication, we try to create an identity and strong branding of the product through design," says Falguni Gokhale, who concentrates on the ‘visual’ aspect of assignments.
