Ericsson today conducted the first high-speed data downlink packet access (HSDPA) demonstration in India during the Convergence India Telecom exhibition in New Delhi. The demonstration was conducted in the presence of Dr Shakeel Ahmad, minister of state for communication and IT and Mats Granryd, managing director, Ericsson India.

Indian telecom service providers are currently preparing to move towards 3G services through WCDMA technology path. HSDPA, the next step in the evolution of WCDMA, enables download data speeds of up to 14.4Mbps, offers operators more than double the system capacity and makes the response time for interactive services faster.

Granryd, said, "The demonstration of HSDPA and the partnerships that we've done with this technology around the world, reiterate our preparedness in offering wireless broadband solutions to operators in India, as they weigh the move towards 3G via WCDMA / HSDPA path."

Ericsson's HSDPA solution currently running live on 15 commercial networks in Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe and North America, where it is providing data speeds up to 3.6Mbps in the downlink. Operators worldwide are today exploring 3G / HSDPA-enabled services, as preparation for fast commercial launches.

Mobile broadband applications such as e-mail, music, internet-services and TV will fully exploit the capabilities that HSDPA provides and become mass-market services.

WCDMA is the leading 3G technology selected by eight of the world's 10 largest operators. Ericsson expects that, by 2007, as many as 80 per cent of all mobile subscribers will use the GSM/EDGE/WCDMA path, in which Ericsson holds the leading position.

Ericsson is shaping the future of mobile and broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
