Explosion at Sun Pharma lab

08 Jan 2002

Baroda: An explosion occurred in the wee hours of 7 January at the R&D centre of Sun Pharmaceutical Advanced Research Centre, pharmaceutical major Sun Pharmas microbiology laboratory, here. The blast, which took place at about 3.15 am in the morning, appears to be due to a leakage of LPG gas. The case is, however, under investigation. The fire was quickly brought under control. No one was hurt.

"The explosion did not involve any chemical or chemical reaction. Other than the damage to two lab areas due to the force of the explosion, the front-glass panes of the building were broken. But there is no significant structural damage to the building. The damage to the equipment has not yet been estimated," says a company spokesperson.

The research centre was set up in 1993 and is approved by the department of science and technology. The centre has around 150 qualified scientists working on novel drug delivery systems and complex actives.
