Facebook Lite crosses 200 mn active users mark

10 Feb 2017

The Lite version of Facebook has crossed 200 million monthly active users. The version has been designed by Facebook to make users more comfortable in regions with poor or weak network.

Facebook Lite, can be described as a slim version of the main Facebook application, which was rather heavy for Smartphones having low RAMs. The Lite version was launched in June 2015, and as compared with Facebook, Facebook Lite consumed less storage memory - below 3 MB.

The initiative had helped many users from different  places, where the bandwidth of the internet is very low. Facebook Lite also has less data consumption as compared to the main Facebook application. Apart from that, Facebook Lite supported 50 or more languages and had gained popularity in over 150 countries.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a post, "We built a light version of Facebook for people with low bandwidth internet. Now 200 million people use it to connect around the world. I loved hearing this news -- what a great start to the day."

"In many areas, networks can be slow and unable to support all the functions available on Facebook. FB Lite gives people access to core Facebook experiences like News Feed more quickly and while consuming less data," Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said in a blog post.

Meanwhile, the latest update to the Facebook Lite app had brought better speed and with this, the app can be accessed from South Korea, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and Israel. It may be noted that Facebook Lite had signed up 100 million users in March 2016, less than nine months after it was launched.
