GE Aviation, a subsidiary of General Electric, will be part of the next phase of development work on a new turbine engine intended to power US Army helicopters.

The Evendale, Ohio-based company said it had been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract as part of the Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine Project for attack and utility helicopters.

The goal of the project is to establish a technology base that will be used to develop a 3,000-shaft-horsepower engine that is lighter, more fuel-efficient, longer-lasting and less expensive to produce and maintain.

GE Aviation has been working on the project since 2001, in areas like advanced power turbines, mechanical systems, compact high-power combustors and advanced compressors.

GE Aviation develops and manufactures jet engines for commercial and military aircraft.
