General Motors to recall 231,000 SUV’s over fire risk

General Motors Co (GM) is recalling about 231,000 midsize sport utility vehicles (SUV's) over risk of an electrical short that could cause a fire.

The recall is an expansion of its August 2012 recall to check 249,000 SUVs for a short in a circuit board in the driver's door that could lead to a fire.

The problem has affected other car manufacturers, including Toyota, and has so far involved more than 1 million vehicles sold in North America alone.

GM said that the master power door and window module in the driver's door can short out and catch fire.

"As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement.

The vehicles involved in the recall include the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and the Isuzu BSE Ascender.

The latest recall covers 193,000 of the SUVs sold in the US, and 38,000 sold in Canada, Mexico and other parts of the world.

The carmaker plans to notify owners directly and said that it will either apply a moisture protection coating on the switch module or, if needed, replace the component free of cost.
