Google has announced the addition of Indian Railways schedules as well as updated information about public transport in eight Indian cities to Google Transit.

This update would allow people to access information about 12,000 trains, as also updated details for bus and metro routes from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Pune.

Google Transit, a feature in Google Maps, allows people to plan public transport trips quickly and easily.

According to Suren Ruhela, director, programme management, Google Maps Google Transit was part of its effort to make Google Maps more comprehensive, accurate and useful for millions of people around the world who took buses, trains, metros or trams to their next destination.

Raha expressed the hope that the addition of the Indian Railways schedules pan-India and updated information for eight cities in Google Transit in India would make it a little easier for users to plan their next trip.

Currently, Google Maps had public transportation schedules for over one million transit stops worldwide in 2,800 cities, including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

To use Google Transit, one would need to type the destination into Google Maps, click on the ''Get Directions'' button and then select the ''Public Transit'' icon to find which metro, train or bus options were available.

Google Maps would then display detailed directions to the destination with the public transport options available including walking directions to and from transit points.
