Google defers launch of streaming device Nexus Q

Google has deferred the launch of the Nexus Q, the internet giant's first self-designed and marketed consumer electronics device, in a move that  would be seen as hurting it hardware credentials.

The announcement of the indefinite delay came in an email to customers who had pre-ordered the made-in-America gadget. Google said it wanted to add more features and functions to the device. It offered a free "preview version" of the streaming device instead.

The device was unveiled along with the Nexus 7 tablet in June when it had received much less acclaim than the tablet designed by Google.

The device, which was to have gone on sale this month, attracted much adverse comment for its lack of usability and features. As part of Google's foray into consumer hardware, the Nexus Q was touted as being a US made product in a reflection of the nascent trend of  "reshoring" manufacturing operations.

In addition to the Nexus 7, Google was also promoting its "Google Glass" augmented-reality eyeglasses.

The company said today that people who had preordered the Nexus Q would get it free.
