Google to unveil subscriptions for popular video channels: Report

06 May 2013

Google was all set to unveil subscriptions for some of YouTube's more popular video channels.

According to The Financial Times reports that  that the move had been under consideration for months and could be announced as early as this week.

It would involve as many as 50 YouTube channels, with subscriptions starting at $1.99 per month. This could prove to be a new source of revenue for the popular video site.

However, YouTube said in a statement to Mashable that there was nothing to announce at this time but the company was looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide its creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models it offered.

The report added, while YouTube might prefer not commenting on the  whole subscriptions talk, earlier web log AndroidPolice had spotted code found in the most recent YouTube app update which indicated that users could subscribe and unsubscribe from a paid channel.
