Haryana government to ensure speedy punishment in Maruti violence

The Haryana government today said it would ensure that those who indulged in violence at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant would be punished "without delay" and that the punishment would be a deterrent to such incidents happening again.

The violence was not spontaneous and was designed to disturb industrial peace in the state, according to an official statement.

Agency reports quoted Haryana industry minister Randeep Singh Surjewala as saying that it was the bounden duty of the state to ensure that the guilty were given speedy and exemplary punishment and the trial commenced so that punishment to perpetrators of the crime became an example for others not to indulge in such incidents.

After it formed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, criminal lawyer KTS Tulsi was appointed by the state as special prosecutor for the trial.

According to the minister, the matter was being investigated by the SIT and there would be a fair probe. He added that the SIT be given one or two weeks for completion of the probe.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki has demanded that the inquiry be expedited.
