Hewlett-Packard bags $2.5 billion NASA contract

Hewlett-Packard (HP), the world's largest computer company, has bagged a $2.5 billion National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) information-technology contract for everything that is IT and plugged into the US space agency's wall.

NASA yesterday awarded the $2.5 billion 10-year contract to HP's enterprise services unit for its consolidated end-user services, or ACES, which will be managed at the NASA shared services centre (NSSC) in Mississippi, the agency said in a statement.

"It's basically everything that's plugged into the wall that's IT," Michael Sweigart, a spokesperson for NASA, said in an interview.

The ACES contract involves managing most of NASA's personal computing hardware, agency-standard software, mobile information technology (IT) services, peripherals and accessories, associated end-user services, and supporting infrastructure.

The contract does not include computer networks and data centres.

Lockheed Martin, which currently provides NASA with technology products and services and lost the bid for the contract, said that it was disappointed at losing the consolidated end-user services contract.
