Hewlett-Packard (HP), the world's largest personal computer maker is planning to sell its webOS unit, just a year after it acquired it through its $1.2-billion acquisition of Palm Inc.

Citing four unnamed sources familiar with HP's plans about webOS, Reuters reported its sources had told it about the possibility of the a sale of webOS software platform, which could net the company ''hundreds of millions of dollars".

The news agency said that Bank of America and Merrill Lynch are advising HP on the webOS sale.

In August, HP said that it would stop development of its webOS smartphones and tablets, essentially making it a dead product without support.

According to Reuters, Oracle may be in the running to buy the webOS platform, which was praised by reviewers but failed in the market.

The move comes six months after its then CEO, Leo Apotheker announced that the company would put WebOS software on every HP computer.
