Mumbai: Information technology giant International Business Machines (IBM) and internet search major Yahoo! have come together to offer free enterprise search software.

The two companies plan to announce the launch of IBM OmniFind Yahoo Edition, entry-level search software for corporate Linux and Windows servers. Yahoo!.com will make available the software at no cost.

The new search software will cater to companies looking to add basic search functionality to intranets and websites. IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition has been designed to install in five minutes, in three clicks or less.

IBM hopes users of its free software would like to add more sophisticated tools that can deliver additional revenue. Yahoo! also plans to increase awareness of its services among businesspeople.

The IBM / Yahoo! software supports up to 500,000 documents per server, the same number as the Google Search Appliance.

IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition is based on the open source Lucene indexing library. There's, however, a cost of ownership for IBM OmniFind Yahoo Edition. The servers required to run the software cost a few hundred dollars.
