India Yamaha recalls ‘Ray’ scooters over steering problem

Two-wheeler maker India Yamaha Motor on Saturday said it is recalling 56,082 units of its scooter 'Ray' to fix a problem with the vehicle's handlebar that in worst cases may impact the steering operation.

"The company has taken this voluntary step after it detected insufficient strength in the handlebar of some scooters due to inadequate welding. There is a chance in extreme cases that this might impact the steering operation," Yamaha said.

The company said the fault in Ray was identified during one of the field studies. "During the extensive study of the product, the company found that the handlebar fitted in few Ray scooters were affected by this potential issue. Having identified all such vehicles with this issue, Yamaha has therefore, decided to voluntarily replace the handlebar in all such scooters. The replacement will be free of charge."

The company has already begun the voluntarily recall through the 'Ray Refresh Campaign' that will be run at the company's dealership network across the country. "The customers will be contacted through mail as well as phone calls starting today to replace the affected part," IYM said.

The campaign applies to all Ray scooters except the newly-launched 'Ray Z' variant which is not affected by the problem, the company added.
