Intel launches Thunderbolt technology with Apple's new MacBook Pro laptop computers

Intel has announced the launch of Thunderbolt technology, a new high-speed PC connection technology that integrates high-speed data transfer and high-definition (HD) display on a single cable.

Thanks to its blazing 10Gbps speed Thunderbolt technology can transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds. The Intel technology is now available on Apple's new MacBook Pro laptop computers.

Thunderbolt technology, which was earlier known as "Light Peak" works to move media faster, simplify connections between devices and allow new and exciting ways to build and use PCs.

At the core of the new technology is combination of high-speed data and HD video connections on a single cable. The technology delivers this via two communication methods, or protocols -- PCI Express for data transfer and DisplayPort for displays.

PCI Express allows for flexibility of connection of almost any type of device, while DisplayPort drives over 1080p resolution displays and up to eight channels of audio simultaneously.

With Thunderbolt technology devices share a common connector, and it allows for daisy-chaining of devices one after another, connected by electrical or optical cables. The new technology is compatible with existing DisplayPort displays and adapters.

Thunderbolt technology is designed to meet the heavy demands of serious HD media creators like videographers who would be able to unleash their creativity using high-bandwidth audio and video capture/mixing devices, and get both low latency and highly-accurate time synchronisation for real-time processing.
