14 Sep 2009

Intel, the world's largest chip maker is expected to use the broom to revamp its top management today after the Fortune 500 storage network provider, EMC poached Intel's top executive, Pat Gelsinger to head its storage product operations.

The New York Times said today that 48-year-old Patrick Gelsinger, SVP and general manager for Intel's digital enterprise roup, will be leaving the chipmaker with immediate effect after working in various positions for 30 years to head Hopkinton, Massachusetts-based EMC's storage-products operations and some smaller software units.

He will take the place of David Donatelli, the previous head of EMC's information storage division, who resigned abruptly in April and joined Hewlett-Packard at Silicon Valley, California.

Intel may give a bigger role to Sean Maloney, executive vice president of Intel and head of sales and marketing, since the entire sales of the company's chip businesses, including its PC, graphics and server chips, is currently under him.

Maloney worked directly under former intel's CEO Andrew Grove and spent several years working in European and Asian markets. He is one of four executive vice presidents reporting to the current CEO, Paul Otellini, and many industry insiders believe he could eventually take the helm as Intel CEO.

According to the US media, Dadi Perlmutter, the head of Intel's laptop chips, may be heading the engineering of all the chip divisions.

EMC, in the meanwhile, has promoted Howard Elias to head the services division, comprising of maintenance, consulting and back-up storage.
