JSW Energy's second 135 MW unit at Barmer starts commercial generation

The second unit of JSW Energy Limited's 8x 135 MW power project at Barmer district of Rajasthan has achieved commercial operation effective 4 October, the company said in a release.

The first 135 MW unit also resumed operatons in September, after scheduled annual maintenance, JSW Energy said in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

"Unit II of 135MW of the 8X135MW Power Project at Barmer District, Rajasthan State, has been successfully commissioned and has achieved commercial operation date (COD) effective 4 October 2010," the company said in its filing.

"The initial difficulties experienced in the sustsined operation of the unit have since been largely addressed and the units are now operating at almost at their rated capaitty," JSW Energy CEO Lalit Gupta said.

The company expects to commission four more 135MW units of the project by the end of the current financial year and the remaining units in the first quarter of the next year.

The company is now engaged in the development of its lignite mine in Kapurdi and expects it to be completed by the end of the current financial year. The government, meanwhile, has allocated a tapering coal-fuel linkage for these units from domestic coalmines, which will address up to 50 per cent of their fuel requirements.

JSW Energy is a unit of the diversified JSW group, which has interests in mining, carbon steel, power, industrial gases, port facilities, aluminum, and cement and information technology.
