KEC International enters water treatment business

Power transmission and infrastructure major KEC International toady announced its entry into the water treatment business, with a Rs31-crore order from the water resources department of Madhya Pradesh.

The project involves renovation, repairs and remodelling of canal under the Urmil tank project in Chattrapur district of Madhya Pradesh, the company said in a release today.

KEC said it plans to mark its presence in the complete value-chain of water treatment and water resource management, which includes irrigation, embankment, flood control and construction of dams, barrages, canals, tunnels etc.

The company had recently tied up with Bioworks AG, a German company, for advanced technologies such as Activated Sludge Process, Sequential Batch Reactor, Rotating Bed Bio Reactor, Moving Bed Bio Reactor, etc. Bioworks AG is a specialist in design and execution of water and wastewater treatment systems and has executed projects in several countries across North America, Europe and Asia, the release said.

"Over the last few years, KEC has been focusing on diversification in infrastructure EPC business to capitalise its knowledge, capabilities, experience and skills related to turnkey/EPC project management. After successful diversification into the areas of power distribution, substation and railways, water is another step towards the direction.

The company is looking to become a major player in water business through both organic and inorganic opportunities," said Ramesh Chandak, MD and CEO of KEC International Ltd. 

KEC International is a global player in power transmission EPC and has a presence in the areas of power transmission and distribution, railways, telecom, water management and manufacturing of cables and towers.

The flagship of the RPG Group, KEC International has operations in 45 countries across South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and the Americas. The company had revenues of Rs17,000 crore in the 2010 financial year.
