Construction and engineering major Larsen & Toubro said on Tuesday that has secured a Rs6,897 crore order from Maharashtra State Power Generation Co to build three boiler turbine units for an upcoming 'supercritical' power plant of 1,980 MW.

This is one of the single largest EPC orders in India`s power sector, the company said in a regulatory statement to the stock exchanges. The plant, being built at Koradi, 20 km from Nagpur, is expected to add 50 million units to the national grid.

The company's advanced supercritical thermal sets would ensure higher plant efficiencies and lower greenhouse gas emissions, thus introducing a new and green era of environment friendly power generation, it said.

The scope of work for L&T, the $8.5 billion technology, engineering and construction group, extends from design and manufacturing to commissioning the boilers.

L&T had recently received an order to construct supercritical equipment for a 1,320 MW plant from Jaypee Industries.
