02 Dec 2009

Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today inaugurated a state-of-the-art casting manufacturing unit (CMU) as part its Coimbatore complex.

The CMU, a world class facility and one of a few foundries capable of manufacturing large-size castings in SG and grey iron for critical sunrise industries like wind power and other engineering sectors, is part of the foundry business unit of L&T's machinery and industrial equipment division, a company release said.

The foundry will have a peak capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum and is benchmarked against the best in the world on production of large-sized castings. It is capable of continuous production of weight range of 10 to 25 tonnes each.

With a covered area of 22,000 sq mts on 6 hectares (15 acres) of land the CMU is equipped with a unique vibratory charging system, a 15 tonne dual crucible and dual track furnace.

It has 11 heavy duty EOT cranes of capacities 25/5 tonne to 75/15 tonne supported by a 5 metre x 5 metre shakeout from General Kinematics, US. The sand system is a combination of Disa and IMF, Italy. Equipment for continuous mixers are from IMF and Sider Progetti of Italy, and the civil work has been executed by L&T ECC.

The foundry has incorporated the latest state of the art pollution control, fire control, conservation of environment and natural resource measures for sustainable growth over several decades, the release said.

The commissioning of the CMU is in step with L&T's commitment to world class operations at Coimbatore for light and precision engineering. The others are a precision manufacturing facility for the company's heavy engineering division, a precision manufacturing unit of the electrical and electronics business group, a valve facility for Audco India Ltd, a switchgear design centre for EBG and an electrical systems and equipment unit for EBG. In addition, L&T also has a product development centre in Coimbatore, it added.
