L&T, Mitsubishi JV for super-critical boilers, generators commissioned in Surat

11 Jan 2011

India's first private sector facilities for the manufacture of super-critical boilers and turbine generators, set up by a joint venture between Larsen & Toubro and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was inaugurated in Hazira near Surat on today.

The L&T-MHI facilities are among the largest of their kind in the world, with a present annual capacity for manufacturing 5,000 MW of equipment, to be expanded to 6,000 MW by 2012.

Super-critical technology for coal-fired power plants is globally recognised as one of the most eco-friendly solutions to power generation, as it ensures higher fuel efficiency leading to higher plant efficiency.

According to A M Naik, chairman and managing director, L&T, it is imperative for India to build domestic capacity for such critical equipment for the power sector. ''The L&T-MHI facilities are a step in that direction. It is a world class facility that will produce world class products,'' he adds.

Ravi Uppal, president (power) and member, L&T board, points out that the two joint venture factories are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and have been built and put into operation in a record time of less than 18 months.

''The Hazira facility is India's largest integrated manufacturing complex for the production of fuel efficient and environmentally friendly super critical generation equipment,'' notes Uppal.

L&T, the $9.8 billion technology, engineering and construction group, has been associated with the construction of gas and coal-based power plants in India and abroad for the past 60 years. MHI is a $34 billion diversified global engineering behemoth with a dominating presence in the energy sector.
