L&T teams up with Rolls-Royce for nuclear components, services

Larsen & Toubro Ltd, India's biggest engineering company, said today it has signed a preliminary agreement with British power system firm Rolls-Royce Group Plc to make components and provide services for light water nuclear reactors globally.

The two companies will collaborate for light water reactors in India and overseas. Light water reactor technology is used for more than 60 per cent of civil nuclear power plants operating worldwide, the company said in a statement from its Mumbai headquarters.

The plan follows a nuclear cooperation agreement between India and the United Kingdom that enables industries in the two countries to engage in civil nuclear commerce, it said.

In the first phase, the two companies will begin work on instrumentation and controls for reactors, aimed at India's nuclear programme, according to the release. India's atomic capacity is expected to jump tenfold by 2035.
