L&T wins Rs144 crore order from UAE

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro has won a new order from the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority in the UAE for construction of a 220 kV power transmission line. The total value of the order is Rs144 crore and would be completed by January 2008.

Most of work, including the design and construction of transmission towers, would be done at the company''s facilities in India.

L&T has identified the Middle East as a major geographical area for rapid growth in future. The company has presence in most of the countries in the region and has received significant orders in the recent past.

The surge in crude oil prices has led to an investment boom in the Middle East. Many governments in the region are running huge budget surpluses and are hence splurging on physical infrastructure. It is estimated that major oil exporting countries in the region earned more than $200 billion in additional revenues last year because of higher oil prices.

The company reported net profits of Rs259.27 crore or Rs19.39 per share on revenues of Rs3,782.79 crore for the quarter ended December. For the pervious quarter ended September, profits were at Rs143.05 crore or Rs10.83 per share on revenues of Rs3,567.97 crore.

L&T is trading at Rs2,264 (up 0.33 per cent) at 02.35 PM on the NSE today.
