L&T wins Rs5,689 crore EPC contract for power plant in Rajasthan

Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro Ltd has won a Rs5,689 crore contract for setting up a 2 x 660 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Rajasthan.

The contract from Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd is on a complete EPC (engineering procurement and construction) basis, L&T informed the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in a filing.

The contract involves design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of two coal-fired thermal units of 660 MW each with supercritical parameters, at Chhabra in Baran district of Rajasthan.

This is also the country's first complete EPC order for 2 x 660 MW supercritical units placed by a state utility on the private sector, L&T said in its filing.

The contract was won following international competitive bidding, involving several bidders. The project has a stringent completion schedule of 42 months for the first unit and 45 months for the second unit.

The Rajasthan order comes as L&T enters the advanced execution phase of several large supercritical thermal power projects. These include complete projects being built on an EPC basis as well as boiler-turbine-generator units and Balance-of-Plant packages.

With this contract, L&T now has orders for supply and installation of 26 supercritical steam generators and steam turbine generators of 660 MW, 700 MW and 800MW.

L&T manufactures critical power plant equipment, including steam turbines at its advanced manufacturing plants in Hazira, Surat.

The company has joint ventures with global leader Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan for the manufacture of supercritical boilers and turbines.

In addition, the facilities at Hazira also manufacture critical equipment and components, including high pressure piping, coal pulverisers, fans, heaters, condensers, electrostatic precipitators and heavy forgings.
