Loose nut forces General Motors to recall 50,000 Cadillac CTS sedans

General Motors is recalling over 50,000 Cadillac CTS sedans due to a nut in the suspension getting loose that could cause one of the rear wheels to turn and become unstable, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Some of Cadillac CTS vehicles of model year 2009-2010 have a condition in which a wax coating on the rear suspension toe link jam nuts may allow the nuts to loosen. If a nut sufficiently loosens, the toe link could separate and the rear wheel would be able to turn inboard or outboard.

The NHTSA said that owners may hear a metallic clanking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle that may give warning of a nut getting loose.

The recall will affect more than 44,000 CTS vehicles in the US, while the remaining will be from China and other parts of the world.

The NHTSA said that GM dealers will at no costs clean all wax residue from the rear suspension toe link and install two new jam nuts. If necessary the rear suspension toe link may be replaced.
