New Delhi: The chairman of the UB Group, Vijay Mallya said yesterday that the group would be launching a low-cost airline to be branded ''Kingfisher'' by the year-end.

"We plan to launch a low-cost no-frills airline. However, it will provide a great experience to the passengers who travel with us," Mallya told press persons after a meeting with the minister for civil aviation, Praful Patel.

The UB group, which already has a no-scheduled operators licence, plans to approach the government for converting the licence into a scheduled operator permit next week. "We are examining whether to lease or purchase the aircraft that we plan to operate. In the licence next week we will be saying that we plan to operate the Airbus A-320 aircraft," the UB chairman added. When questioned on the proposed car project of the group, Mallya said the project was not on hold.
