M&M exploring EV technology for all models

18 Nov 2010

Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles yesterday said it was working on introducing electric-drive technology across the entire Mahindra & Mahindra product range, and a final announcement to the effect would be made during the next fiscal.

According to R Chandramouli, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles chief of operations, teams from REVA and Mahindra were working on all Mahindra models  for integrating the electric drive technology. He said the company was still exploring which vehicle to launch first.

The company has recently tested the prototype of its commercial vehicle Gio with electric drive technology. Chandramouli said the company had to explore the technology in other vehicles beyond Gio and something would be announced in the next fiscal.

In May this year, Mahindra & Mahindra  (M&M) bought a 55.2-per cent stake in the Chetan Maini-promoted REVA Electric Car Company with a combination of equity purchase and a fresh equity infusion of over Rs45 crore into the company.

M&M had two electric vehicles - Bijlee and Maxximo before it acquired the stake in REVA. Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles plant at Bangalore has a manufacturing capacity of 6,000 vehicles per year.

The company has plans to enter the US market within next five years, according to a top company official.
