Mahindra & Mahindra recalls XUV500 vehicles for software upgrade

18 Feb 2015

Mahindra & Mahindra is calling back its XUV500 vehicles to upgrade a software solution related to an airbag. The cars being recalled are those manufactured on or before July 2014, the company said, adding that the repair would be done free of cost.

The company said the programme was aimed at "upgradation of the side-curtain airbag software". The company said the proactive inspection/upgradation was in keeping with Mahindra's customer-centric approach.

Meanwhile, Business Standard reported that Mahindra & Mahindra was trading higher by 2 per cent at Rs1,234 on the BSE after the company decided to upgrade the side curtain airbag software on all the XUV500 vehicles manufactured on or before July 2014.

According to the report, customers would be personally contacted by the company, but the software would be limited only to a software change and no replacement of parts would be done.

"The company is proactively upgrading the airbag software. Incidentally, this is also in keeping with SIAM's voluntary code on vehicle recall. Customers can also visit the 'Service Action' section of the web site and check whether their vehicle is part of the service action," the company stated in a release.

The XUV500 SUV sold by the Mumbai-based company under the Mahindra badge costs over Rs10 lakh and sells an average of around 3,000 units a month.

Meanwhile, the company also planned to launch its electric car in Europe in next six months as it looked to tap rising demand for eco-friendly vehicles in the continent.
