Maruti rolls out 10-millionth car

16 Mar 2011

Rolling out its 10-millionth car - a WagonR VXi - from its Gurgaon plant yesterday, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) joined a select global club of car makers to have achieved the feat.

Maruti is now placed with Toyota, General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen in the elite league.

''As we reach this historic landmark, we thank our founding partners who laid a solid foundation of values and practices,'' Maruti managing director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said.

Celebrations over the historic achievement were however cancelled yesterday due to the havoc in Japan following the devastating earthquate and tsunami that battered the country on 11 March.

According to Nakanishi, Maruti had picked up momentum recent years and rolled out around 5 million units over the last six years.

Starting operations in 1983 as a joint venture between the Indian government and Suzuki Motor Corp of Japan, the company produced its millionth car in 1994.

Production reached 2 million in 1997 and 5 million in April 2005.

The company's revenues grew steadily and it posted Rs30,119.7 crore revenue in 2009-10. Revenue was Rs20,353.3 crore in 2008-09, up from Rs17,860.3 crore in 2007-08.

Currently Maruti has 16 passenger cars on offer in India.
