Maruti sales fall 13 per cent in August, exports rise 19 per cent

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's biggest car maker by sales, saw its total sales drop by 13 per cent to 91,442 units last month from 104,791 units in the same period last year.

Maruti's vehicle sales fell for the third straight month in August due to labour problems at its Manesar plant, production cuts and low consumer demand.

Domestic sales fell 17 per cent to 77,086 units while exports rose 19 per cent to 14,356 units.

''The disruption in production at (the) company's Manesar plant (in Haryana state) in end August impacted the sales numbers during the month,'' it added.

Maruti Suzuki had temporarily halted production in the last week of August at its Manesar plant in Haryana due to labour problems. (See: Labour trouble halts production at Maruti's Manesar plant yet again)

The Maruti management had asked all its workers at its Manesar plant to sign a bond of "good conduct", undertaking not to sabotage production or resort to go-slow tactics, which may hamper production at the Manesar plant.
