New Delhi: Maruti Udyog, India's leading passenger carmaker, has sold 39,178 vehicles in May 2003 and registered a 46-per cent increase when compared to the sales logged in May 2002.

With this, Maruti's run of strong performance, which began in the second half of fiscal 2002-03, has accelerated in this financial year. Owing to a higher demand, the company started production at its third plant during May 2003.

According to officials Maruti's sharp growth in May 2003 has been powered by models across all the segments. Sales of the Maruti 800 in May 2003 touched 16,907 units, a whopping 80 per cent higher than in May 2002.

On the other hand the WagonR and the Alto registered sales of 5,179 and 3,317 units, respectively, in May 2003 while the Zen was preferred by 4,384 car buyers.

The Omni overcame a sluggish trend and grew 13 per cent in May 2003 compared to May 2002. Maruti's slow-moving products like the Versa, the Baleno and the Esteem also logged increased sales in May 2003.

The company exported 2,664 vehicles for the month under review.
