Maruti Suzuki, General Motors hike car prices

17 Jan 2012

Maruti Suzuki, India's top carmaker and General Motors today announced an across-the-board increase in the prices of their cars.

Maruti Suzuki, 54.2 per cent owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, said it was forced to raise prices of all its vehicles by 0.3-3.4 per cent due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates and a consequent rise in input costs.

Effective Monday, this will add a minimum Rs2,400 to the price of the SX4 sedan and a maximum of Rs17,000 to the diesel variant of its Swift hatchback.

Before the hike, the SX4 sedan was priced at Rs7 lakh to Rs9.11 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the Swift diesel was available between Rs5.27 lakh and Rs6.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) depending on the variants.

The company's best-selling Alto model will cost Rs4,000 more against its current price of between Rs2.32 lakh and Rs3.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The price of the DZire sedan has been left unchanged as the company plans to launch a new version next month.

GM India has increased car prices by 0.5-1.75 per cent for models, including the Spark, Beat, Cruze and Tavera. The effective increase in prices range from Rs3,000 to Rs15,000.

Mahindra & Mahindra and South Korea's Hyundai Motor Corp have already raised prices of their vehicles citing rising input costs.
