Maruti to stay put in Manesar, may sack workers

Maruti which says it has no plans to shift from Manesar, despite looking at other states for its expansion, is adamant about not compromising with the workers, and may terminate 600 of 1400 workers.

A week has elapsed since a general manager of the company was burnt to death and 40 others injured when workers at the plant clashed with the management's guards (See: One dead, 85 injured in violence at Maruti's Manesar plant).

At least a 100 workers have been arrested but the name of the worker who killed the manager has not yet been revealed. Meanwhile, six workers, including the secretary, of the union have been taken into custody by the police (See: 100 strikers at Maruti's plant arrested for violence).

The chief minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, meanwhile, met the company's management and announced setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident.

According to Maruti chairman R C Bhargava the company had no plans to move from Manesar. The company would also open an R&D centre in Rohtak soon.

In what is described as a blow to workers, a mahapanchayat of around 200 villages near Manesar declared support to Maruti's management and demanded a CBI probe into the incident. They said the problems had been create by migrant workers and not the locals.
