MTNL offers tracking facility for lost mobile phones

Mumbai: State-owned mobile service provider MTNL has announced the launch of a tracking facility for lost mobile phones for its customers. The service, however, requires downloading and installation of a software on the mobile phone.

''The software can be downloaded for free from MTNL through GPRS and can be installed on almost 250 models of mobile phones,'' a company spokesman said, adding, Micro Technologies is providing the mobile application technology.

The free software, Lost Mobile Tracking System (LMTS) is available for download from MTNL through GPRS, and can be installed on almost 250 models of mobile phones, according to Micro Technologies.

The software that supports GSM technology, stores the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the handset, as well as the SIM (subscriber identity module) card number being used by the customer. It then asks for an alternative phone number or email address where the alert can be sent in case of theft or loss.

The customer is then required to provide the service an alternate number and email ID.

If the phone is then used to make calls using another SIM card, the service sends an email and an SMS to these alternative destinations.

Users would also get an option to remotely delete their personal messages on the mobile phones.
