Nano plant soon to work at full capacity, says Tata Motors

Tata Motors, the maker of the much-hyped but slow-selling Nano, today said its Sanand plant in Gujarat will run at full capacity "within a few months" as demand picks up.

"Nano sales have been very good. Last month, we sold over 8,700 units and within a few months time we will be running the full capacity of 20,000 units per month at the Sanand plant," Tata Motors vice-president (commercial), passenger car business unit, R Ramakrishnan told reporters in New Delhi.

He said the company is producing about 12,000 units a month in a double shift at the plant.

The Sanand facility can manufacture 2.5 lakh units of the car a year, which can subsequently be increased to 5 lakh units, he said.

Once it hits peak capacity, the company would have to consider adding fresh capacity for the Nano to meet demand, he said optimistically.

In March, Tata Motors sold 8,707 units of the Nano, 85 per cent more than in the same month last year, according to company figures.
