NEC to integrate JAKABARE submarine cable system to bridge Indonesia and Singapore

14 May 2008

Japan's NEC Corporation today said that it had signed a turnkey contract with PT Indosat, Tbk in Indonesia for the supply of a submarine cable system to the "JAKABARE" project linking Indonesia and Singapore

The "JAKABARE" (Java - Kalimantan - Batam - Singapore) submarine backbone network will stretch over 1,300km and connect Jakarta (Java), Pontianak (Kalimantan), Batam Island and Changi (Singapore) using NEC's state-of-the-art optical fiber transmission system based on 10Gbit/s x 64 wavelengths DWDM technology.

On its completion in the second quarter of 2009, the "JAKABARE" submarine backbone network will supply capacity of 160Gbit / s in the initial stage, with the potential to increase capacity to 640Gbits / s in the future to provide robust, high-bandwidth connectivity to the growing Indonesian market. This network will meet the need for enhanced backhaul communications capabilities along the Indonesia to Singapore route, as well as for increased capacity to support high-bandwidth broadband services.

Indosat, the leading international telecommunications operator in Indonesia, is currently diversifying its network to address the exponential growth in demand being fueled by the increased use of data and Internet in the country.

"The JAKABARE Submarine Backbone Network will play a very important role in meeting the growing demand for enhanced capacity and connectivity" said Mr. Johnny Swandi Sjam, President Director of Indosat. "We have selected NEC as a trusted partner because it is one of the most experienced submarine system suppliers, and can delivery the system on time to meet market demand."

"We are honored to have been selected as a contractor for the JAKABARE Submarine Backbone Network. We are very proud that we will be able to contribute to Indosat network diversification by providing comprehensive project implementation capabilities and highly advanced DWDM technologies for broadband telecommunications. NEC will continue to aim for a stronger presence in the Indonesian market in the future", said Mr. Osamu Harada, General Manager at NEC Corporation.

As a leading optical submarine system supplier and integrator in Asia, NEC has recently been awarded a number of new construction contracts for submarine cable systems in Indonesia.
