New C class Mercedes drives DaimlerChrysler Indian sales

Chennai: The new version of the C class Mercedes-Benz launched early this month by DaimlerChrysler India Pvt Limited is driving the sales of the Pune-based luxury car manufacturer. Of the 311 vehicles it sold in January till the 25th, it sold 211 units of the C class alone - up from 65 in January 2007 - topping the combined sales of 190 for all models in January last year. .

While the C class has logged an impressive growth, DaimlerChrysler's E class has logged sales of 60 units as against 100 units it sold in January 2006.

On the other hand, the company increased the sales of its S class to 37 this January as compared to 21 units it sold last January.

Encouraged by its 2007 sales of 2491 units, (457 S class, 1137 E class, 788 C class and 118 imported models) the company has moved its sales target for the current calendar year to 3000 units.

Launching the new C class model in Chennai, Sanjiv Sahajwala, Head (Marketing), said the company is hoping to sell around 1000 C class Mercedes Benz in 2008. Sahajwala says the car comes with a new design, colours and looks to attract buyers.

The vehicle is 68 millimetres (mm) longer than its earlier version and the body width has been increased by 42 mm to 1770mm.

The vehicle retains its existing petrol and diesel variants and comes with the options of manual and automatic transmission.

The model is priced in the range of Rs 26.5 lakh and Rs 31.5 lakh making it slightly costlier than its earlier version.
