Japanese car major Nissan will nearly double its current production capacity to 1.2 million units by 2012 in China, the world's biggest auto market, Nissan - Renault  chairman Carlos Ghosn today.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the company's new plant in Zhengzhou, central China, Ghosn said that the company would add three plants in China, boosting its production 20 per cent above its earlier production target.

In April, Ghosn had said that Nissan would aim to increase its production capacity in China to 900,000 cars a year by 2012.

Nissan, Japan's third-largest automaker said that annual production capacity at Zhengzhou Nissan's second plant will increase to 200,000 units from the current capacity of 60,000 units.

With the additional investment and plant expansion, the carmaker said that production would reach 240,000 units by 2012.

''As a result, Nissan's annual production capacity in China expands from the current 670,000 units to 1.2 million units in FY 2012, once production from other facility expansion projects is added, including a second facility in Dongfeng Nissan's Huadu Plant, said the Yokohama-based company in a statement.
