28 Oct 2010

Nissan Motor today said that it is recalling 2.14 million vehicles globally due to a faulty engine control system that causes vehicles to stall. This recall will be the third-biggest for Japan's third largest automaker.

The recall is for nine models including the Cube, March and Tida, which were produced in Japan, the US, the UK, Spain, China and Taiwan between 2003 and 2006.

In Japan, the carmaker is recalling 835,000 units, while it is recalling 762,000 units in the US and Canada, 354,170 units in Europe and 194,409 units in China and Taiwan.

In the US, six models, the Armada, Frontier, Pathfinder, Titan, Xterra and Infiniti QX56 are being recalled, while the Cube, Lafesta, March, Note, Serena, Sylphy, Tiida, Tiida-Latio and Winglord models n Japan.

Yokohama-based Nissan said the problem may cause the engine to stall and in extreme cases, a stalled engine cannot be restarted. There had been no accidents reported due to the fault, said the carmaker.

The company said that it will exchange defective parts on certain models for free.

Nissan had recalled in March 2010 about 540,000 vehicles globally, for problems related with brake pedal pins and faulty fuel gauges. (See: Nissan to recall 540,000 vehicles globally over pedal and fuel gauge problems)
