Nokia hit with back-taxes notice of Rs2,008 cr

Continuing its tax evasion charge against Finnish mobile handset giant Nokia Co, India's income tax (I-T) department has slapped a notice on its Indian arm for allegedly evading taxes worth Rs2,008 crore ($38 million) over five fiscal years starting from 2006-07.

Nokia India said today that tax officials had issued it an order on unpaid taxes; but the Delhi High Court had earlier passed a stay on the I-T demands.

The tax demand was issued on 15 March, according to a Delhi High Court notice posted on its website.

Early this year, tax authorities had raided Nokia's factory in Chennai, in an action promptly criticised by the company as "excessive and unacceptable".

PricewaterhouseCoopers, auditors for Nokia India, were summoned by the I-T department in January in connection with the alleged tax default, then estimated at Rs3,000 crore.
