NTPC Ltd, the country's largest power producer, is planning to set up a 9500 MW hydro power project in Arunachal Pradesh, as part of its `low-carbon' expansion plan.

The proposed Siang Upper Hydroelectric Project, the country's largest, involving investment to the tune of Rs1,00,000 crore, will be set up over a 10-year period.

State-run NTPC has prepared a pre-feasibility report on the 9,750-MW project proposed by the Central Electricity Authority and is currently in the process of preparing a detailed project report for the same.

"We are talking to the Arunachal Pradesh government for setting up a 9,500 MW project in the state," NTPC chairman and managing director Arup Roy Choudhury, said.

"There are some issues with the state government but I cannot disclose those issues right now, we are talking to them," he added.

As of now, NTPC is setting up hydroelectric projects for generating 1700 MW of power, including the 800 MW Koldam project at Himachal Pradesh, which is expected to start power generation in the next financial year (2012-13).
