NTPC’s Barh STPP 660 MW Unit I and 110 MW Muzzafarpur plant start generation

The first 660 MW unit of NTPC's Barh Super Thermal Power Project and the 110 MW unit II of Muzzafarpur Thermal Power station (Stage I ) of Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Limited commenced commercial generation today.

NTPC - Barh will have an ultimate capacity of 3300 MW in two stages (Stage 1: 3X660 MW and Stage II : 2X660 MW). Situated in Patna district of Bihar, the project will benefit Bihar and eastern region states.

The ministry of power has allocated 50 per cent power of stage-II and 26.42 per cent power of stage-I to home state Bihar, and the balance to West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Sikkim.

Situated at Kanti in Muzzafarpur district of Bihar, the Muzzafarpur Thermal Power Station is operated by Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam, a subsidiary of NTPC and a joint venture with Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd in which NTPC owns 65 per cent and the Bihar state utility the remaining 35 per cent.

Muzzafarpur Thermal Power station with a capacity of 2X110 MW was owned by BSEB both the units were under shut down. In order to revive the station, the government of Bihar handed over the station to a JV company formed by BSEB and NTPC.

The project has another 2 X 195 MW capacity under construction at present. Bihar will get 484MW from the project (220 MW from stage-I and 264 MW from stage II) which is 80 per cent of the project capacity.

NTPC currently has over 3200 MW generating capacity in Bihar from Kahalgaon (2340 MW), Muzzafarpur I (220 MW) and Barh II (660MW).

It has a total of 6010 MW generating capacity under construction - from Barh-I (1980 MW), Barh II (660MW - unit V), subsidiary projects at Nabinagar (1000MW), Muffaarpur II (390MW) JV project with BSEB Nabinagar I (1980MW).

NTPC's current allocation of power to the state of 1864 MW is expected to go up to 3622 MW in coming years as new power projects are completed.

It has a total installed capacity of 43128 MW through 16 coal-based, 7 gas-based, 7 solar renewable and 7 joint venture power stations. The central utility has over 22,000 MW projects under construction at its various projects across the country.

NTPC contributes more than 25 per cent of electricity in the country, with about 18 per cent of India's installed capacity.

NTPC has a vision to be the world's largest and best power producer, powering India's growth. The long term corporate plan of the company envisages becoming a 128,000 MW company by 2032 with 28 per cent capacity from non-fossil sources.
