ONGC to set up captive communication network

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has reportedly approached the department of telecom (DoT) for spectrum allocation. The corporation plans to set up a communications network for its Western Offshore site.

The public sector company is seeking permission to set up a captive communication network based on Broadband Wireless Access System (BWA) in the 3.3 GHz frequency band.

Sources say ONGC's proposal is under consideration with DoT which has asked the wireless department to intimate the availability status in the required band.

A similar request from ONGC had been considered for BWA system in the 3.3 Ghz band for onshore locations in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the finance ministry has asked DoT to ensure withholding of spectrum allocation till the Spectrum Review Committee finalises its report.
