Petrol versions of Jeep Cherokee, Wrangler soon at lower prices

19 Nov 2016

Having made its Indian debut earlier this year, iconic American SUV brand Jeep is expected to introduce petrol powered variants of both the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee in the country by next month.

Since the currently available Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT and Wrangler are fully imported as completely-built units or CBUs, their price tags are quite hefty. The petrol variants will be cheaper as there will be some indigenous content, according to Autocar India.

Apart from making the base variants of these SUVs cheaper, the petrol engines will also insulate them from any future regulation on diesel vehicles.

The report further states that the petrol powered Wrangler and Cherokee will come equipped with the same 3.6-litre V6 engine as in the diesel version, producing 285bhp with 353Nm of peak torque in the Wrangler. Power will be upped to 395Bhp in the Grand Cherokee. For the Wrangler petrol, the transmission will be handled by a 5-speed automatic gearbox, whereas the Grand Cherokee petrol will get a 7-speed automatic gearbox.

Th costs of the Jeep Wrangler are expected to go down by Rs18 to 20 lakh while that of the Grand Cherokee is likely to come down by Rs15 lakh. At the moment, the Jeep Wrangler sells Rs71.59 lakh while the prices for the Grand Cherokee start at Rs93.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

A day ago it had nnounced plans to make an affordable, small SUV in India (See: Jeep to make sub-Rs10 lakh SUV in India, may partner Tata).
