Portable and Compaq

Compaq India hopes to achieve a 34 per cent growth in its portable computer sales for the year, in unit terms. The company achieved 34 per cent growth in the first half of the year ended 30 June, which it expects to maintain through to the end of the year.

Compaq has achieved an 18.6 per cent share of the market, out of a total of 29,105 units sold (as per Dataquest figures). While launching Compaq''s a new generation of ultralight portable computers, Kapil Jain, director - business products, at Compaq India said the Indian market for notebooks is still evolving and not very large.

The three portables that have been launched -- the Armada E700 series, the Armada M300 and the Armada M700 -- are characterised by sleek looks, light weight, top functionality, performance and expandability.

These portables are aimed at global businesses, consultants and financial institutions. Mr Jain said that he expected corporate buying to pick up after the elections.
