Railway earnings rise 3.43 per cent in April; fiscal 2009 revenue up 11.06 per cent at Rs80,338 crore

Total earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis stood 3.43 per cent higher at Rs6,635.02 crore during April 2009 compared to Rs6,414.87 crore during the same period last year. Total earnings during the financial year 2008-09 stood at Rs80,338.10 crore, compared to Rs72,338.16 crore during fiscal 2007-08, registering an increase of 11.06 per cent.

Total goods earnings of the Railways have gone up from Rs4382.81 crore during April 2008 to Rs 4525.27 crore during April 2009, showing an increase of 3.25 per cent.

Revenue earning freight traffic carried by Indian Railways stood at 69.85 million tonnes during April 2009, up 2.07 million tonnes (or 3.05 per cent) over the freight traffic of 67.78 million tonnes actually carried by the Railways during the same period last year.

Total passenger revenue earnings during April 09 were Rs1,853.06 crore compared to Rs1,794.02 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 3.29 per cent.

The revenue earnings from other coaching and sundry amounted to Rs256.69 crore during April 2009 compared to Rs238.04 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 7.83 per cent.

Total number of passengers booked during April 2009 stood at 589.99 million compared to 572.88 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 2.99 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April 2009 were 301.26 million and 288.73 million, compared to 300.59 million and 272.29 million during the same period last year - an increase of 0.22 per cent and 6.04 per cent respectively.

Total goods earnings have gone up from Rs48,291.15 crore during April-March 2007-2008 to Rs54,142.52 crore during April-March 2008-2009, registering an increase of 12.12 per cent.

Total passenger revenue earnings during the financial year 2008-09 were up at Rs22,071.34 crore compared to Rs19,837.07 crore during fiscal 2007-08, registering an increase of 11.26 per cent.

Revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs1,994.43 crore during April-March 2008-2009 compared to Rs1,864.52 crore during the financial year 2007-08, registering an increase of 6.97 per cent.

Railways have carried 833.03 million tonnes of revenue earning freight traffic during fiscal 2008-09, which is an increase of 38.82 million tonnes (or 4.89 per cent) over the freight traffic of 794.21 million tonnes actually carried during the financial year 2007-08.

Total approximate number of passengers booked during April-March 2008-2009 was 7,097.60 million compared to 6,678.85 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.27 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-March 2008-2009 was 3,789.03 million and 3,308.57 million, respectively, compared to 3,688.22 million and 2,990.63 million during the same period last year, an increase of 2.73 per cent and 10.63 per cent, respectively.
